Oh, *that* 28

DD's Tumblr - Tue, 12/12/2017 - 13:24

(With reference to this writer-meme that @petermorwood was doing.)

28: Which do you find hardest: the beginning, the middle, or the end?  Middles. MIDDLES MIDDLES MIDDLES EFFING MIDDLES. Euuuuuuuuuuuu MIDDLES.

(Someone also asked about this one:)  29: Which do you find easiest: writing or editing?  Editing. WAAAAAAAY easier. From my first work as a story editor to later editing and consulting work, I find it delightful to read stuff for purposes of helping make it better (and to pick out and help fix the things the originating writer didn’t see).

But there’s editing and editing. Line editing, editing (usually my own stuff) strictly for format or style or continuity issues… gaah. I can take only so much of that and then I have to go do something else for an hour to “rest up” after an hour of line editing.

Out at Ebooks Direct: Feline Wizards volume 2, TO VISIT THE QUEEN

DD's Tumblr - Mon, 12/11/2017 - 22:05

It’s right over here. The full trilogy is now all available on Ebooks Direct at last! (Book 1 is here. Book 3 is here.)

For those of you interested in an omnibus edition: there isn’t one yet, as I’m still looking into the pros and cons. (Among other things: I have to spend some time crunching the numbers to see whether omnibus publication is actually making sense in terms of the business at this point.)

There will be new paperback editions of all three books, with unified covers, in a month or so. (I have to think a little more about the covers and how they’re going to play out at Amazon. The new EBD ebook covers are nice enough, but they aren’t necessarily the ones I’ll want for the paperbacks.)

Thanks again for your patience, everybody! I’ve been waiting a while to get all these reverted to me, and it’s so satisfying to have them sorted out at last.

And now for a moment of Rhiow looking vaguely annoyed.

dark bee tumblr show me the forbidden bees

this is the masked bee! she has no friends and hates everyone. Sometimes when she has kids she raises them alone and doesn’t let the father come for day trips. she loves pollen but does not like waiting for it so she chews flowers open which is essentially stealing. we love her anyway.

these bees are homalictus bees! they are the rainbow gay bees. Females tend to live together in one nest and guard the entrance. one time we found 160 gay girls bunking together. They’re so irridescent and small that they might look like flies but they are really just tiny lesbians.

and this is the blue banded bee! she may look like she’s wacked out, but really she is pretty chill. she just wants to live independently (or with some friends) in a nest or burrow and look after tomatoes.

this is a cuckoo bee! she is really cool! she goes into other bee’s houses and lays eggs there, and then when the baby hatches it eats the host bees’ pollen and lays waste to the hive, murdering and eating all the other bee babies! BUT ONLY if it’s mother bee didn’t kill them all first.

This is the most successful thing ever!

this is dawson’s burrowing bee! they are one of the largest bees in australia and they burrow into the ground to make nests. males are so aggressive that they will literally fight and kill each other to get a female! and if a particularly aggressive male does not get a female he will murder all of the other males out of rage! (and sometimes the females will be casualties of these brawls - here is a video of a bee brawl where a female get decapitated. these bees are very large and kind of look like half bee half cockroach. but the females’s fuzzy white heads are pretty cute! I’m mad that they missed the opportunity to use “les-bee-ans”

This is a tree bumblebee- they’re pretty similar to honeybees in that they have big nests with a polyandrous queen. However, these guys love to be around humans and in gardens, and are super resilient- there are now large populations in Iceland. They have a more complex social hierarchy than most bees, with multiple worker castes. If a worker gets close with the queen she can mate with a drone and lay her own eggs in with the big pile, but eat the eggs of any workers beneath her that try to do so.

This is a valley carpenter bee- the only bee that can thermoregulate and had a circulatory system complete with aortic arch. Carpenter bees are good because they are too big to get into many flowers and have to be extra hairy to get pollen. They live in raw wood in small family units of all females (mothers and daughters or sisters) and are excellent cooks and workers. Males cruise around mating with multiple females and then leave.

These are green sweat bees- they burrow in the ground and live in apartment complexes, where they all use the same entrance but then have their own separate burrows rather than one large room. Some have kids, some don’t, so someone’s always around to keep out invaders. Unlike most bees the males actually do quite a bit of pollinating and go out in groups.

dark bee tumblr has graced us once again with even more forbidden and secret bees we are truly blessed

Coming at you with another Australian native bee; tetragonula carbonaria or the sugarbag bee. They are a stingless species instead using resin to trap and entomb invaders that get into their hive as shown below (which doesn’t happen often because these bees are tiny and the entrances to their hives are also just as tiny).

Like honey bees they are eusocial. Meaning they live in hives with a queen, drones and worker bees that create these complex hives that are completely different to honey bee hives. With honey and pollen pots built on the outside of the hive and the spiral structure in the middle made up of brood cells, where in the centre the queen sits.

I thought it was a variant spelling for the Thuata de Danann?

DD's Tumblr - Sat, 12/09/2017 - 14:43

I don’t think it is. At least I’ve never seen it that way. (The spelling I know for them is “Tuatha.”)

YW question if you've a moment: can wizards somehow radically change the type of "Manual" functionality they have, and if so how, under what circumstances? For example, Nita (for argument sake) losing her "book" manual and instead gaining the singing...

DD's Tumblr - Sat, 12/09/2017 - 14:40

Oh no, no one’s stuck with one instrumentality if they find they prefer another.

The way it normally goes is that on Ordeal, a wizard is provided either with a version that’s popular with other wizards in their culture, or is easiest for them to use. But later on if they find themselves taken with someone else’s, and they think it would work well for them, they’re entirely free to change.

In fact somewhere in canon (I think it’s in Wizards at War) we have Darryl having taken up the iPhone (or similar) version of the Manual, and eagerly pushing it on everyone he knows…  to the point where someone, I think Nita, makes a joke that she thinks he may be on commission. :)

ETA: It’s also mentioned here, where Nita and Kit are trapped up the London Eye and someone (who really shouldn’t) sees them up there…

(Here’s the image from that. I love that image…)

So our very fiesty 6-month old kitten is named Tualha (though we have ever so occasionally felt that “Kamikaze” —which was the first runner-up of the potential kitty names— or “Houdini” —which was never even in the running—would have been more apropos....

DD's Tumblr - Sat, 12/09/2017 - 14:28

It was my understanding that it was something Irish too, but I can’t find it anywhere either. It was the name of one of Annie McCaffrey’s kittens, and I borrowed it.

When @iamblade tagged me with this, its format didn’t allow for a reply with a “keep reading” cut, and there was no way I could just tack this reply on at the end; it’s big enough that  the “long post” warning tag wouldn’t do it justice and might expire from inadequacy.

So it’s under this cut instead…

Out now (at last!) at Ebooks Direct: THE BOOK OF NIGHT WITH MOON

DD's Tumblr - Wed, 12/06/2017 - 14:17

There are ten or fifteen other places I need to make this announcement, but I thought I’d tell you folks first. :)

I’m delighted to be able to tell you that at long last, the rights to the Feline Wizards trilogy have reverted to me from their previous publishers… so at last I can offer the books of the trilogy, all together for the first time, at Ebooks Direct.

The Book of Night with Moon, first of the trilogy, is ready today. To Visit The Queen, the second book (published in the UK as On Her Majesty’s Wizardly Service), will be ready in a day or two when I’ve finished making minor textual corrections and smoothing out the formatting to match those of the first and third books. I’ll post a note here when it goes up. Book three,The Big Meow, is already available in-store.

It’ll take a month or two for the major online retailers to be notified about the reversion by the previous publishers, and for those editions to be pulled; so for the time being, these books are only available at Ebooks Direct. In the New Year the (slightly) revised ebooks, along with new paperback editions where possible, will be made available through Amazon and other online sources. Watch this space, or the Ebooks Direct news blog, for more information.

Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy these books as much as I’m enjoying being able, at last, to bring them to you as a complete trilogy!

(And now the blurb…)

Some cats – the ones who’re also wizards – work in the world as the guardians of Gates, maintaning the portals between realities. When an ancient evil threatens to flood through the worldgates hidden in New York’s Grand Central Terminal and invade New York with surreal horror from another dimension, four champions – an Upper East Side house pet, a neurotic tortoiseshell, a fearless alley tom, and a feral kitten, are called to defend the Earth. Four small wizards must walk between worlds into the terrible realm of the Children of the Serpent… facing ultimate battle in a war against a Darkness born untold aeons before the creation of mere Man…

“Intriguing, with a well-worked backdrop… Fantasy-loving ailurophiles will curl up and purr.” – Kirkus Reviews | “Laughter, spellworks, battles, and personal growth all mesh into a Tolkienesque tale.” – San Diego Union-Tribune | “Love it? I could not put it down.” – Jane Yolen

The holiday stag is back!!

I did this design two years ago and every year it’s gone viral without crediting me. There’s another Tumblr account here that has 300000 notes on it and the original poster didn’t credit me meaning I’ve lost out in a ton of potential sales. Pleeeease, if you retweet or repost an artists work, credit them! It helps them so much! Every penny I make comes from my artwork!

Thank you darlings <3
