\nI don’t get why some spells call for these weird objects. The knotted string you were using. Batteries. Sugar cubes! Who needs this stuff when you have the Speech?<\/p>\n
KIT (V.O.)
\nIt’s something to do with the way they bend space around them.<\/p>\n
INT. NITA’S BEDROOM — UNDER THE COVERS WITH HER — NIGHT<\/p>\n
She’s reading the Manual by Fred’s light, while using the Manual to talk to Kit. We can see his face in a WINDOW on the open page.<\/p>\n
KIT (V.O.)
\nThey’re shortcuts. You could do it with words, but it’d take more energy.<\/p>\n
NITA
\nToday took plenty. I feel like I had three gym classes in a row.<\/p>\n
KIT (V.O.)
\nThe Manual says it’s like exercise. It takes time to get in shape.<\/p>\n
NITA
\nI can’t wait forever for my magical muscles to bulk up! I’ve got to get my pen back before Joanne loses interest and ditches it.<\/p>\n
KIT
\nWe’ll start Operation Frustrated Bully first thing Monday morning. Did you look up Fred’s “advisories?”<\/p>\n
NITA
\nYeah. They’re other wizards! Older ones, here in town.<\/p>\n
NITA’S MOM
\nNita?<\/p>\n
Nita’s eyes go wide in reaction.<\/p>\n
NITA
\n(whispers)
\nFred — !<\/p>\n
INT. NITA’S BEDROOM — CONTINUOUS<\/p>\n
Her mother stands in the doorway.<\/p>\n
NITA’S MOM
\nWho are you talking to? Don’t say “nobody.”<\/p>\n
NITA
\nUh, a kid I met today. A friend.<\/p>\n
NITA’S MOM
\nFine. Come out of there.<\/p>\n
Nita’s head pops out from under the covers.<\/p>\n
NITA’S MOM (CONT’D)
\nYou know the rules about phone calls after lights out.<\/p>\n
Her mom holds her hand out. Nita grimaces, SIGHS an exaggerated teenage sigh, reaches under the blankets and hands her mother her CELLPHONE.<\/p>\n
NITA’S MOM (CONT’D)
\nAnd on the subject of lights…<\/p>\n
Nita reaches under the blankets: the light under them GOES OUT. Nita pulls out a FLASHLIGHT and hands it to her mother.<\/p>\n
NITA’S MOM (CONT’D)
\nThank you. Now get some sleep!<\/p>\n
She goes out, shuts the door.<\/p>\n
INT. NITA’S BEDROOM — UNDER THE COVERS — CONTINUOUS<\/p>\n
Nita ducks under the blankets again.<\/p>\n
FRED
\nIs it all right now?<\/p>\n
NITA
\nYeah.<\/p>\n
Fred’s light FADES UP. Nita opens her Manual again: Kit looks out at her.<\/p>\n
KIT (V.O.)
\nEverything okay?<\/p>\n
NITA
\nYeah, my mom thinks I’ve been disarmed. Where were we?<\/p>\n
KIT (V.O.)
\nThe third part of that repulsion spell. Let the seventh-graders deal with that.<\/u><\/p>\n
NITA
\nRight. Fred, a little more light here?<\/p>\n
FRED
\nSure.<\/p>\n
KIT
\nDon’t think you’re gonna hog him! I get him tomorrow night.<\/p>\n
NITA
\nSo I keep hearing. Now about the rest of these ingredients\u2026
