\u2014 if Fox has its way? A federal judge has denied Warner Bros.\u2019 motion to dismiss 20th Century Fox\u2019s current lawsuit against it,<\/a> claiming that Fox still owns rights in the Watchmen <\/em>project dating back to the 1990\u2019s. And the release of \u201cWatchmen\u201d is presently scheduled for March \u201809.<\/p>\n

This one could get very messy. (Side thought: did somebody at Warner neglect to sacrifice a goat to the Movie Gods this year? Or did the statute of limitations run out on that particular goat, maybe\u00a0a few weeks\u00a0after \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d premiered? They haven\u2019t been having a very good month, what with one thing and another\u2026 ETA: Variety’s discussion of this situation suggests they haven’t had a very good six<\/i> months.<\/a>) But Nikki Finke suggests:<\/p>\n

\u2026The court\u00a0is still contemplating Fox’s motion for an injunction.\u00a0This is indeed a stunning development which could imperil Warner Bros’ entire 2009 movie slate. Sources point out to me that Warner Bros had a similar problem with the Dukes Of Hazzard<\/em> movie before Judge Feess and had to pay tens of millions of dollars to release the film.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

(wry look) And here\u2019s an idle thought:\u00a0 You have to wonder if the angry prayers of hundreds of thousands of cranked-off Harry Potter fans <\/a>have suddenly been half-answered. What does Warner do if it can\u2019t release Watchmen in March \u201809?\u00a0 Well, how about plugging \u201cHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince\u201d into the gap? March \u201809\u00a0wouldn\u2019t be November \u201808, but it wouldn\u2019t be July \u201809 either\u2026<\/p>\n
