Yesterday the Archbishops of Canterbury and York <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601102&amp;sid=ahnfJUz63zws&amp;refer=uk\" target=\"_blank\">condemned London-based brokers who indulged in short selling<\/a> as &#8220;bank robbers and asset strippers&#8221; and accused them of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/ap\/2008\/09\/25\/europe\/EU-Britain-Church-Markets.php\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;generating unimaginable wealth &#8230; by equally unimaginable levels of fiction&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But now it turns out that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/6424d306-8b47-11dd-b634-0000779fd18c.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Church of England has been quite willing to sell short and hedge currencies<\/a> when doing so suited its purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Tsk, tsk. Looks like the fiction isn&#8217;t entirely localized. (Someone will mention &#8220;whited sepulchres&#8221; fairly soon, I&#8217;m sure.) These guys should really find out what their financial managers are <em>doing<\/em> before issuing these pronouncements.<\/p>\n<p>(A Pythonesque touch here: the FT also reports that the CoE &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/9286979e-8b4b-11dd-b634-0000779fd18c.html?nclick_check=1\">[has] \u00a35.6bn under management,<\/a> mostly in a mix of equity, property and vast tracts of land.&#8221;)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oh dear.
