After decades of research and development, the NRL has created a transparent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2015\/04\/24\/the-armys-testing-clip-on-ray-gun-attachments-for-its-rifles\/\">bulletproof<\/a> material that can be molded into virtually any shape. This material, known as Spinel, is made from a synthetic powdered clay that is heated and pressed under vacuum (aka sintered) into transparent sheets. &#8220;Spinel is actually a mineral, it&#8217;s <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Spinel\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spinel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">magnesium aluminate<\/a>,&#8221; Dr. Jas Sanghera, who leads the research, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrl.navy.mil\/media\/news-releases\/2015\/transparent-armor-from-nrl-spinel-could-also-ruggedize-your-smart-phone\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a>. &#8220;The advantage is it&#8217;s so much tougher, stronger, harder than glass.
