{"id":554,"date":"2005-01-09T19:04:57","date_gmt":"2005-01-10T02:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dianeduane.com\/outofambit\/?p=554"},"modified":"2005-01-09T19:04:57","modified_gmt":"2005-01-10T02:04:57","slug":"somewhere-i-wish-id-been","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dianeduane.com\/outofambit\/2005\/01\/09\/somewhere-i-wish-id-been\/","title":{"rendered":"Somewhere I wish I&#039;d been"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Via <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.newsfromme.com\/\">Mark Evanier&#8217;s blog:<\/a>  on January 7th, <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.povonline.com\/cols\/COL018.htm\">Soupy Sales<\/a> was formally awarded  <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.newsfromme.com\/archives\/2005_01_07.html#009395\"> his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was right in the middle of the generation that grew up with the great kids&#8217; TV that  appeared on WNEW in New York during the late 50&#8217;s and early-to-mid 60&#8217;s.  (<a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.tvtome.com\/tvtome\/servlet\/ShowMainServlet\/showid-8453\/Wonderama\/\">&#8220;Wonderama&#8221;, <\/a>anybody?  I would have been in the Sonny Fox and Sandy Becker generation.)  Soupy&#8217;s slightly weird brand of humor sank deeply into my brain:  I can still hear the affable ravings of the only-partially-visible White Fang and Black Tooth, not to mention Pookie the Lion and the rest of that deranged crew.<\/p>\n<p>Soupy&#8217;s comic timing was faultless.  No one knew how to pie somebody like Soupy.  And <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.netscrap.com\/netscrap_detail.cfm?scrap_id=80\">Noel Godin,<\/a> aka &#8220;M. le Tarteur&#8221; &#8212; the guy who hit Bill Gates with one, and installed the verb <i>entarter<\/i>, &#8220;to be hit in the face with a pie,&#8221; in modern French usage &#8212; may possibly owe Soupy a very sideways debt.  For the Great Art might have fallen wholly into decline after the death of vaudeville had not its faint spark been kept alive by a slightly crazed guy from North Carolina.  Anybody who had the staying power to either hit over 19,000 people with pies during his career, or to be hit by them (in a rather Zen way, the <a HREF=\"http:\/\/scoop.diamondgalleries.com\/scoop_article.asp?ai=1802&amp;si=126\">stats<\/a> are <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.amdest.com\/stars\/ssales.html\">confused<\/a> as to the direction in which the pies were traveling) deserves a star for that alone&#8230;but there was so much more.<\/p>\n<p>Congrats, Soupy!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Via Mark Evanier&#8217;s blog: on January 7th, Soupy Sales was formally awarded his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
