So it\u2019s that time of year when nominations open up for the World Science Fiction Society\u2019s Hugo Awards, <\/a>and it turns out that this year, once again, work of mine is eligible to be nominated. (I confess to being pleased this is happening again, since some of my earliest work is involved\u2014not to mention my very earliest award-nominated work\u2014in a universe for which I have something of a soft spot.)<\/span><\/p>\n

The award in question is the one for Best Series. And the series in question is the Tale of the Five<\/em> series (also known as the Middle Kingdoms series or \u201cthe Door Into\u2026\u201d books): The Door Into Fire<\/a>,<\/em> The Door Into Shadow<\/a><\/em>, and The Door Into Sunset.<\/a><\/em> Also involved here is the second of a bridging series of five novella- or novel-length works dealing with events occurring between the original trilogy and the main series\u2019 upcoming completion in The Door Into Starlight.<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The WSFS rules say:<\/span><\/p>\n

To be eligible for nomination for a Hugo award for Best Series in a given year, a series must comprise at least three works totalling at least 240,000 words, and one work in the series must have been released during the previous year.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The first three works in the Tale of the Five<\/em> series total approximately 330,000 words. The first bridging work, the novella Tales of the Five: The Levin-Gad,<\/em><\/a> was published in August 2018 (making the T5<\/em> series nomination-eligible last year). The work triggering nomination-eligibility this year is T5: Levin-Gad<\/em>‘s sequel, Tales of the Five: The Landlady,<\/em><\/a> published in May 2019\u2014a novel set about three years in MK continuity after the events of Levin-Gad.<\/em> (The remaining three works in the bridging sequence will be published during 2020 and 2021.) <\/span><\/p>\n

In this 75,000-word novel set in the main character through-line of the Door Into…<\/em> series, sorceress and swordswoman Segnbora tai-Enraesi\u2014last scion of one of the Forty Noble Houses of Darthen and hero of the great War against the Shadow\u2014is forced to come to grips with the one part of her life she’s successfully avoided for more than a decade: her day job.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

With motherhood no longer enough of an excuse to get her off the hook, Segnbora’s liege lady Eftgan of Darthen sends her off to start restoring to working order the long-declined House of which Segnbora is now Head. Both of them know this will be hard work. But Segnbora doesn’t realize how<\/strong> hard until, while visiting her lands in Darthen’s rural north, one Holding of House tai-Enraesi turns out to be concealing a danger unexpected enough to challenge even a companion of Dragons and a wielder of the blue Fire of Power…<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
