{"id":6811,"date":"2021-01-26T21:47:27","date_gmt":"2021-01-26T21:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dianeduane.com\/outofambit\/?p=6811"},"modified":"2021-03-20T09:07:27","modified_gmt":"2021-03-20T09:07:27","slug":"2021-hugo-nomination-eligibility-the-young-wizards-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dianeduane.com\/outofambit\/2021\/01\/26\/2021-hugo-nomination-eligibility-the-young-wizards-series\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 Hugo nomination eligibility: the Young Wizards series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So it\u2019s once more that time of year when nominations open up for the World Science Fiction Society\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehugoawards.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hugo Awards<\/a> (for <a href=\"https:\/\/discon3.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Discon III<\/a> later this year), and it turns out that this year, once again, work of mine is eligible to be nominated. (I don&#8217;t mind saying it&#8217;s delightful to have this happening again, with the addition that this time it kind of took me by surprise. In fact I&#8217;ve only rarely had a work jump my bones as quickly as this one did&#8230; and it took someone else reminding me about it to realize that it was a qualifying work. Well, it&#8217;s been an interesting year&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>The award in question is the one for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehugoawards.org\/hugo-categories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Best Series (scroll down, it&#8217;s there&#8230;),<\/a> and the series in question is the <a href=\"http:\/\/youngwizards.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Young Wizards<\/a> series. The work bringing this series into play for award consideration in 2021 is <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ebooks.direct\/products\/owl-be-home-for-christmas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Owl Be Home For Christmas<\/a>,<\/em> a novella-length work published in late December of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The WSFS rules say:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>To be eligible for nomination for a Hugo award for Best Series in a given year, a series must comprise at least three works totalling at least 240,000 words, and one work in the series must have been released during the previous year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just for reference purposes: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youngwizards.com\/so-you-want-to-be-a-wizard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youngwizards.com\/deep-wizardry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youngwizards.com\/high-wizardry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">novels<\/a> in the Young Wizards series total approximately 270,000 words. Those were followed by another seven traditionally-published novels, totaling in the neighborhood of 900,000 words, as well as several independently-published works totaling another 250,000 words or thereabouts.<\/p>\n<p>2020&#8217;s relatively unexpected addition to the series takes us into previously unexplored territory: the present day.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>JD 2459186.50000 \/ December 2nd, 2020&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tonight&#8217;s the night when the famous Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is about to be lit in an elaborate ceremony in midtown Manhattan. Like everything else in the COVID-stricken world of 2020, this tree lighting has been forced to differ from all the others that have preceded it.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s another reason this particular tree lighting will be unique. This tree is the one in which the tiny saw-whet owl the media christened &#8220;Rocky&#8221; was discovered, trapped, when the tree was set up two weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>The humans who helped &#8220;Rocky&#8221; and released her back into the wild had no idea of the forces about to be unleashed on New York City.
