Beemer and the icky roundworms

by Diane

Beemer was still throwing up yesterday morning…and throwing up roundworms. Ick. The poor kitty was most seriously infested: it turns out kittens can get roundworms from their mothers’ milk. The vet in Athy gave us some Panacur for her (the generic name of this drug is fenbendazole: it’s a much more effective and nontoxic antihelminthic than piperazine, the commonest commercially-available wormer for kittens and puppies). After we squirted half a milliliter of this down her yesterday morning, she dozed most of the day away…then got up in the evening and started eating and drinking again, and most importantly, playing. She slept with Peter again last night, and this morning was up early knocking a pingpong ball around, and eating and drinking some more. She gets another dose of the Panacur every Saturday for the next few weeks, and after that can go on a more normal worming regimen.

Meanwhile, Squeak and Goodman have both seen her briefly, with varying results. Squeak saw her and went outside, Goodman saw her, indeed even bumped noses with her — then went out for an hour or so, and came back with a baby coot (which he’s since eaten). I wonder if he’s going to start hunting for Beemer, as Squeak did for him? Or maybe this was just a reminder that he’s a real grown cat with a “job”, not like this little fluffy thing we just showed him? Hmm…
